VeganMoFo 2017 #2: Eating Out: Bake & Burger

2nd: Junk food forever! – It’s not all kale chips and chia seeds being a vegan – show us your fave vegan junk food.

There are SO MANY amazing vegan food places in Brisbane, my list of to go to places is huge, my list of to go back to and try new things places is huge, my list of favourite places to go back to and eat my favourites... huge. While we maybe don't stack up to some of the other Australian cities, Brisbane is definitely a pretty great place to be vegan these days.

One place that had been on my list was Bake & Burger, a vegan friendly burger place. It is only open from Thursday to Sunday, and runs in a pop-up style. They have a set menu of regular non-vegan things, but they have ever changing specials, which includes three vegan savoury options every time. They also have an exciting array of sweets in their cases - and they are all vegan! So cool!

It is a bit of a strange little place to get to. You drive down the M1 highway, take an exit, pull into a 7-11 petrol station that has a row of empty storefronts... and tucked into a corner is Bake & Burger. It is small, though they do have some seating out the front. And while the outside may lack ambience, they do a good job of making the inside very cute.

We headed down on a Friday for lunch, and these were the vegan specials that day. They always seem to include a junk gems, and either two burger or one burger and a bowl (the week after we went they had a fried mac and cheese ball bowl).

We got both the burgers, cut in half so we could each try one. I liked the patty in the falafel burger, it had big chunks of sweet potato. And the BBQ jackfruit burger was good (though as you can see had slaw rather than potato salad). They make their own cheese. These were very mess and fun to eat!

Of course we had to get some junk jems! The toppings were similar to the filling of the jack burger, but served on crunchy potato gems (aka tater tots for my US friends).

And of course we had to get some sweets! We got them to take away, so please forgive the crappy kitchen bench photo. They had quite a few options, we picked the fudge slice, peanut butter oreo pretzel blondie and the carrot cake. They were all really good, but the blondie was my favourite - it had a nice layer of salty peanut butter on it. Peanut butter is always the way to my heart.

I really loved Bake & Burger, and will be heading down there again. I think it definitely fits the 'junky' brief for today's MoFo prompt, but it does so without relying too heavily on processed vegan foods. Don't get me wrong, I love processed vegan foods, but it is nice to see places making their own from scratch!

Cute Kitty Photo of the Post - Month of Sahara

2004_08_28_Saharas3rdBirthday_WithPresentInBasket

Sahara was 18 months old when she came to me. She was an adoption kitty who needed a home because her person was going into a retirement village. Although a purebred Abyssinian, her one eye meant that interest was low. What is wrong with people? Well, my incredible gain. She lost her eye when she was a kitten after a nasty bout of cat flu, but it never slowed her down or stopped her from catching things. She had incredible hunting instincts. She is pictured here with her birthday present - a zoom around the room catnip mouse that she loved!

  1. Junk Jems look like the best ever!!! I love potato gems and I'm sad that I have to go back to a country that doesn't have them!

    1. The fact that the UK doesn't have potato gems continues to baffle me.

  3. The junk jems look out of this world! The burgers do too, but anything made with tots/potato gems catches my eye!
Sweet gorgeous Sahara. What is wrong with people?

    1. People are ridiculous. Anyway, sucks to be them because they missed out on 14 years with the sweetest, cheekiest, most loving little red girl in the world.

How could anyone have skipped over sweet Sahara when looking to adopt?

    1. She was on an Abyssinian website rather than a rescue website, so I suspect the fact that she could not be shown played a part. Ugh ugh ugh. Stop breeding and showing cats. Adoptions forever!

    1. It is such a random location! But I can't complain, it is not that far from me. And tasty.

  7. 1) That food is super amazing looking!!!

    2) I love learning more about Sahara. She is such a sweet heart. It is such a shame how people don't like "flaws" in animals. My friend dogsits a blind dog, and made a comment to the owner that she was her favorite dog. The owner was like "Really? This dog? Why?!"

    1. I don't know why people are so dismissive of animals for things like that. Sahara was so wonderful, she was perfect in every way!
