VeganMoFo 2017 #10: Dim Sim vs Dim Sum

10th: Secret ingredient – Is there an unconventional ingredient or product you use to make a certain dish that no one would suspect?

Well, I don't have any sort of secret ingredient, product, or process that I use to make anything. Pretty sure 'adding nooch to everything' is no secret. So I am going off topic today with an important discussion about Dim Sim vs Dim Sum.

This is Dim SIM. She is my cat.

Dim Sim

These are Dim SIMS. They are a Chinese-inspired dumpling that was created in Australia. They are popular here, you can get them in fish and chips shops. Mostly, they have meat, but you can get them vegan at certain places. Learn more about them here! They share their name with my cat, Dim SIM. I know they were created years before her birth (and mine), but kind of rude to name your snack food after my future cat. It is just such a cute name!

Now, my non-Australian friends... I know what you are thinking. How does Dim SIM fit in with Dim SUM? In Australia, Dim Sum is generally called Yum Cha. Regular readers may remember my obsession with eating yum cha at Easy House.

So, Dim SIMS (the dumpling) can be part of a Dim SUM/Yum cha selection. As seen below.

So, in conclusion, Dim Sim's name is with the SIM, not the Sum. She is a dumpling, not a series of small bites served in steamer baskets or small plates.

Dim Sim and Sahara

Dim Sim, being the first of my three girls, was never a fan of having sisters, she is a one cat cat. While her and Gizmo almost never got on, she tolerated Sahara a little better. Here is a rare photo of the two of them touching! Sitting on my mum's lap! As you can see, Dim Sim was happily situated and then Sahara came along and plonked herself on top. Typical little sister!

  1. Thank you for this! I've always kinda wondered about the difference after reading your post (but I've clearly been too lazy to actually google and fine out). :-)

  2. Haha! I love this whole post. It was very rude indeed for that unknown person to name a snack food after your future cat. People can be thoughtless. ;)

    1. I wonder if I can apply for monetary compensation? It's been hard, you know? ;)

  3. I love the look on Dim Sim's face when Sahara is touching her! So not thrilled, but also not giving up her spot on mom's lap!!

    1. She clearly super wanted to be there, because normally she would just take off. So it is through gritted teeth that she sits there.

  4. Thank you for the education! Dim Sim looks suitably put out by the theft of her name.

    1. I loved reading about it all. I remember once talking to a US friend about yum cha and they said they didn't have that there. I was horrified until I realised it had a different name. Life without yum cha/dim sum is no life at all!

    1. She has to make her appearance! They are so cute together, even if she was miffed about it.
