Eating Out: Thien An

Aimee Bubble Tea at Inala is a place that I have been hearing about for years, but never made it to. It has since had a name change to Thien An, but premise remains the same. Cheap vegetarian Vietnamese food! I finally made it out there with my friend Amy a couple of months ago.

I approve their menu of yummy drinks! Aimy got a Passionfruit Drink with Rainbow Jelly, and I got a Strawberry Drink with Pearls.

I tossed up a few different options on the menu (which is quite heavy on the mock meats), but eventually settled on the pho. I had heard a lot about it! It had a lovely broth that was full of noodles, tofu, veggies and some mock. Plus lots of crunchy beansprouts and herbs to top it with. Totally worth eating hot soup on a million degree 'winter' day.

Amy had the Wonton Soup, which she said was nice though the broth itself was quite oily.

We shared some spring rolls, which were standard fried spring roll-ness.

The Shredded Pork Fresh Rice Paper rolls were disappointing, however. They were pre-made from a cabinet, so had done that thing where the rice paper is simultaneous very dry but kind of sticky, and the filling was also very dry. Would not get again.

If was definitely fun to finally get to try this place out! Amy also got a couple of Bahn Mi sandwiches to take home, which looked good. She's had them before, and said that they are a little dry. But if you take them home then you can add some mayo. Pro tip! I was also happy to hear them ask if she wanted chili on them or not. Sounds like they can be made mild if you are a chili-phobe like me.

Dim Sim and Sahara touch!

Resharing this photo, taken many years ago, where Dim Sim and Sahara actually touched! It was amazing. This was seven years ago now, and they have never done it like this again. But I live in eternal hope.

  1. Ha Ha. That's how my dogs touch - back to back and facing away from each other! It's not super rare, but I couldn't say they ever actually snuggle. Usually it's because they both want to sit on the only dog bed in the room, so they just tolerate each other. We have a dog bed in every room, but not two dog beds (usually they are on our couch/bed/laps).

    1. The 'I am just tolerating your presence but I still refuse to look at you' position. ;)

  2. I don't like fresh spring rolls if they aren't super fresh. You're right, they get a really icky texture and just blech.
Dim Sum and Sahara touching, so sweet!

  5. Weirdly I had a dream about bubble tea last night! I was going to open a bubble tea shop in my town. No idea where that came from! Great cat picture :)

    1. The pho was good, better than the one I had in Sydney recently. I'd like to eat it again on a cooler day.

  8. Dry spring rolls are awful. There is a sushi bar at a local grocery chain I go to and their vegan options (aside from vegan sushi) are AWFUL! Dry spring rolls and you get that same dry sticky thing with their veggie dumplings. Gross.

Funny thing- I was randomly thinking about how my one boss though the tapioca in bubble tea were grapes (she was looking at a photo) It took a LONG time to explain what they are, and why they are awesome.

    1. Ugh, why do they think people want to eat dry and sticky things? Do they not taste them themselves?

I love tapioca pearls in bubble tea! But perhaps you have to try them to really understand them. I can imagine it would be weird to hear a description of them. Heh.

  9. Do you enjoy the drinks with pearls? I'm not a fan of the texture.
The soups look good, but the spring rolls look best. Yum!
Cuddling kitties! What cute cats =)

    1. I LOVE pearls! They are chewy goodness, they make a drink a mini-meal... and then I eat my actual meal. Hee hee.

  10. I really miss Pho! It's so delicious when it's made well and those mock meats look just like the kind I ate again and again in Vietnam.

    1. They had quite the selection of mock meats in their products. And just up from the restaurant was a little vegetarian Asian grocery shop with heaps of mock products to take home.
