USA 2013 - Part 6 (Seattle)

Crumpet with Almond Butter and Marmalade from The Crumpet Shop

Saturday was the last day of the conference, and I wandered down to the markets before hand to pick up some breakfast. I was keen to try The Crumpet Shop, which makes crumpets that are vegan as long as you specify that you don't want them buttered. They have a range of toppings to choose from, and I had almond butter and marmalade on mine. Their chai has honey already in the pre-mix, so I got some mint tea instead. They have free refills on tea.

Clam Chowder at Cyber Dogs
California Dog at Cyber Dogs

Lunch was back to Cyber-Dogs. I tried the vegan clam chowder (which was mostly just really salty) and had a yummy California Dog, which had a hot dog, veggies, avocado, bacon, cheese and salsa. The cucumbers were a bit odd, but otherwise this is a great hot dog.

Cinnamon Scroll from Cinnamon Works

In the break, I braved the markets on a Saturday (so many people) and picked up a cinnamon scroll from Cinnamon Works to have for afternoon tea later. I found the one with the lease amount of glaze on it (glaze is just too sweet for me) and had a lovely snack during between lectures.

Even though it was a Saturday the conference still ran for the full day, so I was there learning about kitty nasal disease until 6.15pm. Luckily we had reservations at Wild Ginger, which was just a short walk from our hotel. Wild Ginger is a fancy Asian restaurant that has a vegan menu. It is very popular, so a reservation is highly recommended!

Delrae (apple cider with pomegranate juice, raspberry and housemade sweet and sour) at Wild Ginger

I got a fun virgin cocktail to start, called the Delrae. It has apple cider, pomegranate juice, raspberries and house-made sweet and sour. Yum!

Squash and Sweet Potato Stew at Wild Ginger
Vietnamese Tofu and Tomato at Wild Ginger
Purple Passion Thai at Wild Ginger
Sichuan Green Beans at Wild Ginger
Sticky Mango Rice with Coconut Caramel Sauce at Wild Ginger

We started with some Squash and Sweet Potato Stew, which was very lovely, though I couldn't find any of the beancurd skin or mushrooms in it that were on the menu. The Vietnamese Tofu and Tomato was my favourite, it had a fabulous fresh flavour that I couldn't get enough of. The Purple Passion Thai I was less keen on (though we'll come back to that in my 2014 travels), as I found it a bit too spicy and the eggplant was a bit mushy. We also had some Sichuan Green Beans, and all meals come with a mix of white and brown rice. For dessert there was sticky mango rice with coconut caramel sauce, that was completely amazing. That sauce!

The next morning we headed into the U-District and to one of my favourite places in Seattle: Wayward Vegan Cafe. This place is amazing, right down to the nooch shakers on every table.

Veggie Omlette at Wayward Vegan Cafe
Sides of Avocado and Tempeh Bacon at Wayward Vegan Cafe

Wayward has a huge menu, so there is always a lot of time spent choosing. I got the Very Veggie Omelet, which is stuffed with broccoli, carrots, spinach, red onion and cheese and topped with tomato. It comes with a side of home fries, but I also got a side of avocado and tempeh bacon.

Hillbilly Omlette at Wayward Vegan Cafe

Ashleigh ordered the Hillbilly Omelet, which had sausage, hash browns, grilled peppers and onions and was topped with gravy and cheese. This was yummy but very filling.

FrenchToast at Wayward Vegan Cafe

We also got some French Toast to try. We got two pieces, not realising how giant they were. We were more thinking of those crispy pieces of french-bread type French Toast you see. Ultimately these kind of tasted like pancakes, so yummy but not really what we were after.

A huge breakfast to start a big day of wandering and eating around the U District!
