VeganMoFo 2011 #10: 'The Garden of Vegan'

How is everyone enjoying MoFo so far? It is pretty full on. My Google Reader is flooded with posts, and I imagine I will be reading MoFo posts well beyond the end of the month! I am trying to comment on posts as well! Unfortunately, Blogger is being stupid and if you have a Blogger blog with the comment section down the bottom of the post, it won't let me comment! Rude. Oh well. Thank you to everyone who is commenting on my posts, too! I am enjoying reading about your cooking and cookbook experiences.

The Garden Of Vegan
Tanya Barnard and Sarah Kramer, Arsenal Pulp Press, 2005

The Garden of Vegan

The Garden of Vegan is the second book by Barnard and Kramer. It is in almost identical style to How It All Vegan, except red instead of green. Chapters include Introduction, Kitchen Wisdom, Breakfasts, Lunchbox, Microwave Meals, Soups, Salads & Dressings, Appies & Snacks, Side Dishes, Dips & Spreads, Sauces, Entrees, Breads & Muffins, Desserts, Odds & Sods, and Parties. I bought this book from Borders, a long time ago, when a new store had just opened. They had a beautiful vegan section, with lots of titles and several copies of each. Those were the days!

Tantalizing Tofu and Spinach Salad

Tantalizing Tofu and Spinach Salad

I am totally in love with pan-fried tofu. It is delicious, and I could snack on it all day. This salad puts it on a bed of baby spinach and green onions, and tops with a yummy dressing and gomashio.

Fantastic Dijon Potato Salad

Fantastic Dijon Potato Salad

Fantastic by name and fantastic by taste, this is a simple salad with a vinaigrette made from olive oil, red wine vinegar and Dijon. It also has dill, I add extra because I love dill!

Zoe's Grandma's Roasted New Potatoes

Zoe's Grandma's Roasted New Potatoes

I think I've said before that I love potatoes. Simple roasted potato recipes excite me every single time.

Avocado Salsa

Avocado Salsa

Make double of this delicious recipe, and have those corn chips on hand. This is delicious! I made this for a party with work people, and they loved it too. One of my friends took the recipe home, and just a few weeks ago made it for us to nom on during a scrapbooking day.

Portobello Mushroom Bake

Portobello Mushroom Bake

This is pretty delicious. It is very rich, so there is no problems with the small serving sizes. The sauce is very strong tasting with the earthy mushrooms, but the onion slices provide a lovely sweet counterpoint. Serve with rice and greens (Swiss Chard and Garlic from the book makes a nice side).

Almond Coconut Muffins

Almond Coconut Muffins

I don't have an notes written down for this one, just the five star logo. So they must have been good!

Banana Walnut Bars

Banana Walnut Bars

I baked these to take to work one day, where they proved a surprised hit! What really takes them over the edge is the delicious cinnamon sugar topping.

Here are a few other five star recipes that don't have photos:

Portobello Mushroom Sandwiches
Fried Egg Sandwiches
Hungry Person Stew
Sarah & Tanya's You-Must-Make-This Dressing

My overall feeling about The Garden of Vegan is much the same as How it All Vegan, though I think the savoury offerings are a bit stronger and more varied in this second book. The baked goods section is strong, as in the last book. It is a solid book with lots of options, though it lacks the wow factor for me of some of my other books.

Do you make food for your workplace or work events? What recipes do you like to make the most?

Cute Kitty Photo of the Post

Little Silver Kitty

This is Little Silver Kitty. She lives in our neighbourhood and frequently visits our yard. I don't know who her people are, but they let her roam all day and all night out and about - this is not good! It is raining today, so I hope she is somewhere warm and dry. She's quite sweet, but my girls don't like her.

  2. YUM! I own that book too, and in fact, the (very basic) tofu sandwich in it is mine (http://www.vegangela.com/2011/06/14/quick-and-easy-tofu-sandwich/). I've added you to my RSS reader as I love following other Aussie vegans. Take care! :)

  3. I used to have this book - loved it! I lent it to my MIL who was thinking about going veg. She didn't. I think I need to demand my book back! I also think I need to buy a second copy :)

  4. I love making stuff to take into work. It's usually cookies or cake and I like to get feedback on new recipes. I did make lunch for co-workers one year when it was World Vegan Day which was lots of fun. Might try that again this year.

I haven't bought this one as had so many others but I may give it a whirl. If it's on sale sometime. But potatos! I may get it just for those!
