Eating Out: The Green Edge

The Green Edge is a Brisbane institution. It was our first vegan grocery store, and it also has a restaurant space offering breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks. I stayed away from eating there for a while, because the food was often underwhelming. However there are new owners, and they are doing wonders with it. So many new products, and the food has improved as well! So I have been there quite a bit. Prepare for food photos!

The first time I went back to eat was to have dinner with a friend. I was there early, so I had a Gingerbread Latte while I read my book. It was mild and sweet.

When my friend arrived, we ended up twinning for dinner, ordering the same things off the specials board. We started with some pumpkin soup, which was simply amazing. I haven't seen it there since, but I wish it would come back! And we also both tried the mac and cheese. Could be a bit cheesier, but was very yummy and comforting. This pops up on the specials board fairly regularly, so keep an eye out for it!

For dessert we both had a piece of Black Forest Cake, and I had a turmeric latte. They have several goodies in their bakery case, which are provided by a number of local providers. I am pretty sure the cakes come from Flour or Life. Black Forest is one of my favourite flavours. I wasn't a huge fan of the icing on the top and side of the cake, but that is easily scraped off and the rest was great.

Another time I had breakfast before the start of a bake sale I was organising there. I was super excited to try the Facon and Edge Muffin, which has a hashbrown, bacon, and a vegan egg on it. The egg is a vegan fried egg that you can find in the freezer section, it is an Asian brand. Not sure what it would be like on its own, but it was good on this!

I stayed for lunch afterwards, and enjoyed some pan-fried dumplings from the specials board and a Sin Brightening juice (apple, carrot, spinach, beetroot, parsley).

Another time I stopped by for lunch to try the famous Bacon Double Cheeseburger, which was really good! With a side of their delicious chips. I also got a Liver Cleanser juice (apple, beetroot, celery, cucumber, spinach, spirulina)... for balance!

I also got a slice of carrot cake to take away, but unfortunately I didn't think it was that great. A bit dry, and again not a huge fan of the icing.

On my most recent solo lunch visit there, I went green. I got the Mega Matcha Burger (which is on the specials board, but has been there for months) and a Green Juice (celery, kale, spinach, apple, ginger). The burger had yummy local tempeh, a veggie patty, beetroot, sauerkraut, and salad.

The Green Edge is somewhere I certainly now recommend for people to go and eat at, the food is really good! Plus you then have the option of picking up some essentials or some treats from their HUGE range!

Eating Out: The Green Edge

Circumstances keep seeing me back at The Green Edge, and I am not mad about it. Delicious food to eat and buy? Yes please. You can see posts of my previous visits here.

The Green Edge does some good comfort food, and one day I was feeling not great and their Gnocchi came through for me. A cheesy tomato sauce, served with garlic bread and salad.

With a turmeric latte to go with it, a perfectly warming and comforting lunch.

Back in the very early days, The Green Edge used to make an amazing satay tofu burger, but then they changed location, changed hands, and changed chefs and the satay tofu became kind of gross. But with the most recent owners and their new chefs, I thought I'd get the Satay Tofu starter to give it another try. OH MY GOD. It is so good. Tofu batons are cooked in chickpea batter and served with a delectable satay sauce. So good!

You can get the satay tofu on a burger or as a salad. It has been a hot summer, so I went for the salad option the next time I got it. This was delicious. With a little serve of chips on the side because carbs are life.

One of their specials for a while was the Philly Cheesesteak. They kindly left out the capsicum for me, and I got this delicious roll stuffed full of beefy slices and smothered in cheesesauce.

And of course, I almost always have to get a treat to take away. Here are some sweeties...

This red liquorice and chocolate chip giant cookie was AMAZING!

I was excited to get this pumpkin pie slice back during Halloween, but unfortunately it was far too sweet for me. My dad enjoyed it!

Speaking of Halloween, this spoooooky black liquorice and marshmallow borwnie was legit.

I love carrot cakes, and this carrot cake blondie was a fun twist.

A terrible photo because it got squished a bit in transit, but this Cherry Almond Muffin with Ganache was lovely.

Sahara

Yesterday (Monday the 17th of February), was a very different day to Dim Sim's birthday the day before. The 17th of February is the anniversary of Sahara's death, it has been three years this year. While last month I took myself out and about for Gizmo's anniversary as I needed to be out of the house for the morning, yesterday I had a much more mellow day at home. Snuggling Dim Sim, watching some movies, making some nice food (including broccoli for dinner - Sahara's favourite)... and of course I lit my candle for Sahara and thought about her a lot. A couple of days ago at work I saw another cinnamon Abyssinian, and while she had a completely different face and body shape to Sahara, the fur was the same. That colour, the way it changes over the body, it made me feel very sad and missing my girl.

Eating Out: The Green Edge

Hello friends. It is some ancious making times at the moment. I hope everyone is staying safe and taking whatever precautions you need to for your own health, both physical and mental. So.... probably I won't be eating out much in the near future. But because I am far behind on blogging, I still have weeks of eating out content to share with you.

Some more delicious meals at Brisbane's most awesome vegan grocery shop and cafe, The Green Edge.

A while ago The Green Edge revamped their breakfast menu, including some housemade poached eggs. I don't miss eggs, I don't like really eggy things, and yet I keep trying vegan eggs at cafes. I started off with the Eggs Benni, and I am happy to say that the eggs are great! They are fun and have an oozy yolk in the middle, but do not have that super eggy taste or texture that I don't miss. So if you are after a super realistic egg experience, no. But for me, yay! As well as the eggs, it had avocado and ham on English muffins, covered in a lovely Hollandaise sauce. And I got a hash brown on the side, of course. And a turmeric latte. A wonderful breakfast!

On my next visit, I was keen to try out their Croque Madame special. Ham and cheese sourdough smothered in a delicious cheesy sauce and served with an egg. This was savoury and decadent. I finished it off with a lovely iced chocolate with soy whip, and got a delicious housemade cinnamon bun to take away.

If you can't stay to eat, but still need to grab something for later, they also have some salads and wraps in their cabinet. My favourite is the Chicken Caesar Salad, which has salty chicken, bacon, croutons, parmesan, and an amazing Caesar dressing.

Back to eating in again, one day it was raining but hot and steamy. I don't like this, I want it to be cool when it rains. Thankfully, The Green Edge has great air conditioning, so I could sit inside watching the rain outside and pretend it was a chilly day. And what better on a chilly, rainy day then a hot chocolate with marshmallows and some mac and cheese? With the most amazing Jam Doughnut Blondie for afterwards.

Eating Out: The Green Edge

A bit of a photo heavy post today, but lots of goodies and I'll keep the text light. I've been back to eat at The Green Edge, Brisbane's vegan grocery store and cafe, a few times lately. Let's start off with the savour meals! (You can see my other Green Edge posts here.

They have a sit down area, of course, but they also have a cabinet of things that you can pick up if you are on the go. My favourite thing is their Chicken Caesar Salad. It is so fresh, loaded with Lamyong Salty Crispy Chicken, bacon chunks, and croutons, and has a delicious dressing.

Of course, if you want to eat in they have a lot of options on the menu. Like this Double Bacon Double Cheeseburger.

They also have a breakfast menu, and my favourite thing is the Bacon and Egg MockMuffin, with a side of chunky chips because breakfast should have potato.

They have a large drinks menu. The frappes and shakes all use coconut ice cream, so if I am looking for something refreshing I will order off the juice menu. The Clean Dream is a mix of watermelon, apple, and strawberry.

They also have a range of baked goods and treats in their cabinet. While some of these come from other local vegan businesses, they also have got their own in house baker who makes amazing treats! I have sampled many of these when I was stopping in for groceries. So please enjoy this parade of photos.

Giant Cookies (This is just half of one, and it is the size of my face. It is chocolate cookie in the middle, surrounded by chocolate chip cookie, and the dough from the chocolate cookie spreads out in between the other dough for a bit, and it is so good.)

BrisVenture 2023: Day 1: The Green Edge, Sushi

Hello friends! Last week the magical happened, and I had three friends from the US come and stay with me! My friend Molly had come and stayed with me in 2017, but this time she brought my long time Seattle friend Helen with her, plus new friend Sharnette. Helen and I have known each other for just over ten years, ever since she slid into my DMs on my second visit to Seattle and we had dinner. I have since visited her there twice more, including staying with her during my final visit, but it has been EIGHT YEARS since we have seen each other, and for her to be here in my hometown was incredible! They arrived early Monday morning, and I picked them up from the airport. I also saw these two coming through customs.

Dinos at the airport

After initial pick up, it was home for them to all have a shower (it was a long flight, made longer by delays) and get situated. Then we headed out for some food and vegan shopping at The Green Edge (see my previous posts about The Green Edge here). We ordered a lot of food! And some very fun drinks. Including the Strawberries & Cream Frappe for Sharnette, colourful lattes (turmeric for me, matcha for Molly, beetroot for Helen) and Helen also got a Salted Caramel Milkshake.

Lunch started with some chips and some Buffalo cauliflower wings.

Helen was committed to trying Australian things while she was here, so she got the Origin Burger (it has beetroot, which makes it Australian), where as Molly and Sharnette for the VFC Four Piece Meal and the VFC Burger respectively. I had the Mac & Cheese with a side of turkish bread. Sharnette also got the Truffled Mac & Cheese to try and take home for later.

After lunch, some shopping was done at The Green Edge for fun things. Then I took them to our two major supermarkets, Coles and Woolworths, so they could see and buy some of the vegan things we have available here. It was a pretty fun shopping trip!

After that we headed home for a very relaxed evening and early night. For dinner we ordered in some vegan sushi from a place called Sushi Too: Mini Tofu Rolls, Mini Avocado Rolls, Mini Pickle Rolls, Tofu and Vegetable Rolls, Inari, and Seaweed salad.

I am very excited to share our adventures and food with you from the week. Can't believe it is already over. At least I can relive the magic through blogging!

Eloise

One of the joys was introducing my girls to my friends! Eloise is pretty shy when you first meet her, and it took her a few days to fully warm up, but she was much admired. Obviously.
