Onto the food. Thanks to Hillary, I have become adept at keeping an eye out for anything that is on sale, preferably a really good sale. So when I saw this pack of about to expire Unreal Chick'n for such a low price, I had to grab it (once I confirmed that it didn't have coconut oil in it). I wasn't sure when I would use it, but that is what freezers are for!
Eventually the day came when I dug them out and defrosted them. There are four patties in a packet, and there are three of us in the house, so I decided to use three of them to make burgers and try the other one as mince. The packet is very keen on the versatility of them.
Frying them up for the burgers, you can see that they browned up OK, though still a little pale. These 100% do not smell meaty, nor do they bleed, so yay.
I served them up on a bun with some spinach, BBQ sauce, and sesame cheese. Alongside some slaw I had made from another cookbook, that will appear at another time on the blog. These are OK. They are definitely not going to fool anyway, which is fine by me. They have a slight TVP old school taste to them, and texture wise they are not smooshy. Definitely needs some other fun stuff on the burger, as the taste alone fine but nothing outstanding.
With the leftover patty, I made a bowl of savoury mince for lunch one day. It crumbled up pretty easily into the pan to fry it up. I mixed it with some gravy, spinach, and baby peas. Served over a baked potato.
Would I buy it again? Definitely not at full price, and maybe not on sale either. It was fine, but there are chicken-style burgers I prefer over this. I might use it to make something mincey though, as there are no vegan chicken-style minces around that I am aware of, but only if it was on super sale. But fun to try!

Yay for trying new things! I think the bleeding vegan burgers are so strange, so not being "bloody" is a plus, for sure.

DeleteHa! I updated my blog profile this week too! I just realized it said I'd been vegan for 13 years, and it's been 15 years. So we were both way overdue. I need a new photo! I'm intrigued by sesame cheese! What is that? Also I've got to look up what a mince is! So many things to learn!

And do you not use the word mince over there? I feel like the US term I have seen might be ground... so you'd call it ground veef or chick'n, but we'd call it veef or chick'n mince!
Yup, it's "ground chicken" (etc.) here but when it's vegan it's usually called "crumbles."

That's why I love clearance items, because you don't feel so robbed if they aren't great. especially because vegan specialty items are so freaking expensive!!!
