USA 2015 Part 12: Seattle

How am I up to 12 parts of this trip? Are you all over my holidays stories by now? I'm sorry, there was just so much food!

The next morning I walked from Helen's place to Cafe Flora to meet Jess for breakfast. I've been to Cafe Flora twice before, and while each time has been good I have always ended up with a bit of order envy or regret. I am happy to say that I ordered like a champion this time! I started with a giant mug of chai, which was lovely and, happily, not overly sweet. For food I ordered a delicious potato and leek scramble, as well as a side of smoky collars, which had a gentle spice. We don't have collards here so I am always excited to eat them in the US. I also finished with a glass of their rosemary lemonade, which is always amazing.

Jess had the spicier Rancho Colorado Scramble.

After breakfast we walked up to the Asian Art Museum in Volunteer Park. I say walked up, because while it is technically not a long walk, it turns out there is a hill of death you must ascend to get there. I love Asian art, and though this gallery is relatively small it had a lovely collection. They also had a Chiho Aoshima exhibit there, which I loved. The style of the artworks was right up my alley! Here is a bit of a blurry photo of one of my favourites. Of course it has a cat.

Afterwards we had a bit of a stroll through Volunteer Park, and Jess indulged me in my SQUIRREL! spotting hobbies. They were a bit elusive, but then one agreed to be photographed and squeed over from a distance. Look at their floofy tail! There was also lots of pretty wild flowers growing in the grass, which I love.

We then walked to Capitol Hill (lots of walking!) for lunch at Bamboo, which I had been told had the best vegan pho around. We were thirsty, so had a coconut each to drink. I loved the pho! Great tasting broth and lots and lots of tofu and veggies. Very good.

Bamboo is just down the road from Casita International, which is a great little shop that has a lot of locally designed goods. They are also a stockist of Rescue Chocolate. I recommend stopping in!

The other motivation for lunch at Bamboo was that the Seattle Cookie Counter was set up across the road for the afternoon. This is an awesome little mobile food van selling vegan ice cream sandwiches! I was torn between Oatmeal Chocolate Chip with Cherry or Strawberry Lemonade, but I eventually went for the cherry one. It was so good. The cookie was amazing! Their ice cream was coconut based, which I was a bit hesitant about, but I am happy to report that it was within my threshold for coconut fat and didn't have a heavy coconut fatty texture at all. Apparently they are playing around with oat based ice cream these days, which I would love to try one day!

After lunch I walked (more walking) downtown to Wholefoods at South Lake Union to pick up some supplies for dinner back at Helen's place. On the way back to Helen's, just as I got off the bus, I realised I didn't have my most beloved Herbivore Love Life hoodie with me! I chased down the bus but couldn't find it, so but when I rang Wholefoods they had it at their lost and found, and promised to keep it safe until I could get back there in a day or two. Phew!

Helen's awesome friend Molly came over for dinner (she is also a vegan and a cat lady, so we hit it off). We had planned a bit of a sample dinner so I could try a bunch of different things rather than eating out. We started out with a fancy cheese plate. This had a block of Daiya Jalapeno, Punk Rawk Original, Parmela Original Cream Cheese and Parmela Hickory Smoked Gorde. My favourite was definitely the hickory smoked, I love smoked cheeses!

Our main was a mac and cheese sampler. I had bought some frozen Amy's and Candle Cafe mac and cheese, as well as some Harbour Creek Farms mac and cheese mini studel. Helen picked up some Plum Mac and Yease. I also had some Field Roast Maple Breakfast Links, as well as a box of three different types of kale salad from the food bar at Wholefoods, because greens are important! My favourite mac and cheese was the Amy's one, as the Candle Cafe one just seemed to have globs of cheese smattered around rather than the pasta being mixed through a nice cheesy sauce. The little strudel bites were also excellent!

And finally, dessert. Molly had bought one of the new Daiya cheesecakes, the New York style, as well as some gorgeous fresh strawberries. We also had some carrot cake and cinnamon bun that had traveled with my from the Chicago Diner, and some Full Tilt vanilla hemp ice cream. The cheesecake was OK, I wasn't blown away by it. I wouldn't mind trying their strawberry flavour one day, but it is nearly $20 here in Australia so I don't see that happening any time soon. The carrot cake was good. However, the star was the cinnamon roll. Remember the cinnamon roll? It was 4 days old at this point, and pretty hard from being in the fridge that long. We gave it a zap in the microwave... best cinnamon roll I have ever had. Even the next morning I had some cold from the fridge. Still the best cinnamon roll ever. If it is this good when it is old and a bit stale, how amazing must it be fresh?

On my way down to Wholefoods I stopped by Pretty Parlor, a gorgeous shop full of vintage and locally-designed clothes. I had visited last year and picked up an absolutely gorgeous dress by Glam Cloud. The best thing about Pretty Parlor is Vincent, their kitty. I had met Vincent last year, but shortly after my holiday he was attacked by a dog and needed a lot of surgery and recovery. Thankfully he is all good again now! He consented to allow some pats and hugs.

USA 2015 Part 11: Second home Seattle

For anyone who doesn't know me, I am in love with Seattle. Deep, serious love. I pretty much consider it my second home now, sorry Sydney. I just love, love, love it. I want to go there all the time. There were closer cities to Chicago that I could have visited for my final stop, but I couldn't go all that way without a visit to my beloved Seattle.

I managed to get from my AirBnB to the airport in Chicago on public transport, which I was super happy with. O'Hare airport has a few vegan options, and I stopped by CIBO to pick up a few vegan snacks made by Vegani Gourmet for lunch on the plane. I got a Vegan Jerlusalem Steak Roll and a Carrot Tuna Salad. The tuna salad was actually quite nice, even with some red capsicum as an ingredient, it was blended well, and was an unusual base for a vegan tuna salad. Sorry about the slightly blurry mid-flight photo.

Landing in Seattle, I caught the Link to the Westlake Center and then went straight to the downtown Veggie Grill for afternoon tea and to wait for Helen, who is my Seattle bestie and was very kindly letting me stay at her place for my visit. To sustain myself I had some of Veggie Grill's delicious mac and cheese and also the Grilled Street Corn, which was super yummy.

Dinner was another VVC reunion with the Seattle crew, Anika, Jean and Britt. My friend Jess from Melbourne was also in Seattle, so he also joined us. We went to one of my favourite places in Seattle, Wayward Vegan Cafe. It was my first time eating off the breakfast menu, and I knew I was going to have the Club Sandwich (with a side of coleslaw). This was huge and delicious! Helen and I also shared a serve of the Smoky Bacon Cheesy Fries.

Britt got the Spirit Burger. Which makes me think of Bring It On and the Spirit Stick.

Jean got the Dirty South, which was seitan ribs, potato salad and kale.

Jess and Anika both got the Country Fried Chicken, however Anika got the breakfast sized one and Jess, not knowing about different sized ones, ordered off the dinner menu and got this huge plate! The potato cake here was amazing!!!

Wayward also had a dessert menu, with a ridiculously large selection of pies. I didn't get a photo of any, but I did get a bite of the Chick-O-Stick Pie, which was insanely sweet but yummy in small doses!

The next morning I woke up early with the early rising sun, but it was OK because Helen's kitty Zeno graced me with some pretty serious and intense snuggles. Breakfast found me heading back off to Wayward, of course! I got the Benedict with a side of garlic kale. This had a really nice sauce, and was very tasty. Though I must remember that I need to sub homefries for hash browns because US hashbrowns are not the hashbrowns I am thinking of.

Wayward does not have chai, and I was feeling a need. Just a few blocks away is the vegan-friendly Wayward Coffeehouse, which is nothing to do with Wayward Vegan Cafe. Unfortunately their chai was pre-honeyed. Nope. But I was heading into the main part of the U District anyway and I knew I could get a nice one (and some free wifi, Wayward's was being spotty) at Chaco Canyon Cafe.

Every year since 2013 I have visited the Henry Art Gallery at UW and enjoyed the thesis artwork presentation of their art and design students, and this year was no different. There are some great pieces here, including this series of gorgeous paintings that I just loved. They are by Maria Rose Adams. There are kitties in most of them! Reading the bio on her webpage, turns out she is a plant-eating, cat-loving yogini, so no wonder I gravitated towards her paintings! I also did a half an hour mindfulness meditation in the beautiful sky space there, which was lovely and calming before lunch.

HAG

For lunch I went to Araya's Place for an amazing vegan Thai all you can eat buffet. This is just a photo of my second plate because the photo of the first plate is so blurry! But I did eat spring rolls, pad thai, red curry, steamed vegetables with peanut sauce, stir-fry, mixed cabbage and mushroom, fried rice, salad and yet more peanut sauce. Their peanut sauce it the best! I was so full I couldn't quite finish my second plate, so I didn't have room for the black rice dessert.

After lunch I met up with Jess for a visit to Vegan Haven to do some vegan shopping. So many choices! I stocked up on some goodies to bring home with me, and some gifts as well.

It was pretty hot, so we stopped back at Chaco Canyon for some iced tea.

We were meeting up with Helen for dinner. After a slight mishap (we were chatting and missed our bus stop and ended up almost no where and had to slightly illegally jump on a Link to get back), we made it to El Borracho for food. I had heard so much about this place, so I was excited to finally try it! Though pretty stressed from the ridiculous trip there. We shared a plate of their amazing nachos. I had been hearing about these for years, and all the talk was right. They were great! Very well layered and a good chip to topping ratio. We also had some adorable little happy hour tacos, including the soyrizo (a bit too spicy for me) and the potato poblano.

After dinner Helen had got a ticket for me to go and see the opening night of Jurassic World in 3D. This movie was so much fun! Though I spent the entire time either shaking me head (why, why you idiots, why are you doing that, do you want to die, why are you so stupid?) and hiding behind my hoodie in the scary parts. The cinema had vegan chocolate popcorn, which was pretty nice (I am normally not that into popcorn), though we didn't eat much because we were so caught up in the movie!

USA 2015 Part 10: Chicago tourist

The thing about not living in the US is that my VVC Reunions happened quickly! Less than a week after saying goodbye in Austin, I had plans to catch up with Kelly in Seattle. She had the perfect suggestion, visiting a cat rescue for a tour of the facilities. Tree House Humane Society is a fantastic no-kill cat shelter a bit north of where I was staying. They have a lot of senior and some special needs cats, and also have an FIV colony as well. It was a quick tour, because they are a busy facility, however it was amazing to be able to meet the cats. If anyone is in the Chicago region and thinking about a feline companion, I strongly recommend checking Tree House out, or making a donation - they are planning on building an amazing new facility!

After getting our kitty cuddles in, we went for my daily visit at The Chicago Diner. This time I had the Titanic BLT Burger (seitan patty, seitan bacon, french fried onions, tomatoes... I had the chipotle sauce on the side because it was a bit spicy) and cheese waffle fries, with an iced chai (which was more like a milkshake). It was so good... again!

I felt like a lazy evening at home watching terrible cable and reading trashy books, plus I was pretty full from late lunch, so I picked up some takeaway from Vegetarian Express. I had a tasty BBQ seitan tamale, and also some guacamole. They give you a huge serving! It was good, though kind of spicier than I was expecting!

The next morning it was time for some proper touristing. I started my day with a breakfast at home, which included the leftover piece of french toast. This was actually awesome as leftovers!

2015-06-09 08.05.03

My place was very close to Lincoln Park, so I went on a nice long walk through the park. It was pretty! There were ducks and geese. The SQUIRRELS! were hiding.

The park is also home to the Peggy Notebaert Mature Museum, which I didn't have time to visit but it looked interesting. This is a statue from outside, a Memorial to Extinct Birds.

At the end of the park is the International Museum of Surgical Science, which happened to be free to visit on Tuesdays. There were some fairly interesting exhibits in here, though others were a bit boring and basic (to someone like me who has surgical/medical training). This history of surgery was the most interesting. There were a few gross-out bits (not as many as I had hoped!), but not too much if you are a bit squeamish. They had some really beautiful anatomy artwork.

I was pretty hungry by now, so I hopped on a bus to downtown and headed to one of the several Chicago locations of Native Foods. I had the Oklahoma Bacon Cheese Burger, which was huge! I had to eat some of it before I could actually put it together as a burger, and a side of Native Fries. To drink I had the seasonal special Strawberry and Lavender Lemonade, which was sadly a bit too strong on the lavender and tasted a bit like soap. The Chocolate Strawberry Parfait, however, was outstanding. It was so yummy! The cream is almond cream, which was delicious.

Chicago is famous for its architecture, and certainly is you walk around downtown there are lots of pretty buildings and parks and statues to be seen. I took a bit of a wander through the streets and the parks, before ending up down by the newish river walk, which is very lovely.

River Walk

I decided the most touristy thing I could possibly do was to do a Chicago Architecture Foundation River Cruise, which was actually really nifty and interesting! It was super sunny though, so I had to keep moving about the boat to find shade spots and occasionally pop into the inside part. As well as learning about the buildings, it was a good insight into Chicago's history.

After my cruise, it was back for my final visit to Chicago Diner. I was really stressed about what to choose on this final visit, but I ended up going with the Pierogi Quesadilla, which had intrigued me since I first saw it on the menu, and a strawberry milkshake (because that is my favourite flavour of milkshake). I also had some Flash Greens on the side because I needed some kale in my life at this point. The quesadilla was really yummy, because potato and sauerkraut in a tortilla could never be wrong! The milkshake... outstanding. They use real strawberries, and it was so good!

I firmly believe that everyone needs to go to The Chicago Diner at least once in their lives, but preferably more. It is certainly worth an entire trip to Chicago just to eat there, which to be real is the reason that I wanted to go to Chicago in the first place. If I was in that area of the US again, I would 100% go back there and eat at the diner every single day. So good!

Sahara

I know you were probably expecting a million photos from Tree House, but to be honest I didn't actually take any. Shocking I know! However given that I wasn't looking to adopt, I was very aware that the tour was taking them away from the million things they need to do. But I think that this cute photo of Sahara sleeping that my mum sent me is just as delightful. :)
