Eating Out: Pu Kwong

I went to Pu Kwong with Amy for lunch a while ago. She hadn't tried it before, and was keen to give it a go. I am always keen to go there!

We shared a couple of entrees (that's appetisers, for my American readers).

First up we had the Fried Dumplings ($6), which were oddly served without any sort of sauce. The pastry was a bit on the thick side. They were still good, but some sauce would have improved things!

We also got some BBQ Pork Buns ($4.80), because I can never say no to these on any menu.

We also shared some Chinese Greens in Ginger Sauce ($10.90), because greens are important!

For my main (or entree, for my American friends), I had the Tofu and Mushroom Hotpot with Black Pepper Sauce ($17.90). This was good, though very heavy on the pepper! The tofu was silken tofu, which was pleasant. The mushrooms were chopped up really finely, I would have preferred larger mushroom pieces.

Amy had the Salt and Pepper Pork ($13.90). I had a bit, as expected very deep fried!

Afterwards, we took our full bellies (and our leftovers) to the local IGA (a supermarket here) and Amy bought a million dollars worth of Gardein, Match Meats, Tofurkey and Vegenaise. It was amusing. :)

Amy has three glorious kitties! Catpurrnicus (ginger boy at the back) and Cat Sagan are pictured here making out with my bags one Saturday afternoon when I visited Amy after work. Not pictured here is Neil de Cat Tyson.

  1. The mushroom hot pot looks delicious. It is weird to serve dumplings with no sauce! Love the kitties, and I love their names! Also, yay for your friend buying all the plant meats!

    I love pork buns. Something I miss as a vegan. I know they are out there in vegan form.... just gotta make it to those places.

    1. I have found they are pretty common at vegan Asian restaurants around here, so hopefully there will be some in your area. :)

    1. I always get them. There was a place in Sydney that did the best ever yum cha and had these ginger pork buns that would make you cry they were so good. But then that place shut down! Tragedy.

  8. You call appetizers entrées? Are entrées then appetizers? Interesting. (nm, I see you call it a main).
    The dumplings look really good, but they most definitely should have had sauce.
    I LOVE BBQ buns :) I have only found one restaurant to make them vegan & gluten free, but they are so good!
    I think you made a good choice sharing different entrées to try multiple things. And you also made a good choice with your main - hotpot with mushrooms and tofu. I would have picked that as well ;)
    Amy's cat names are hilarious! Love them. And they are so cute!

    1. Entrees and mains. When I first bought US cookbooks I got so confused... Why do you have appetisers and entrees? Why are you entrees so big? WHERE ARE THE MAINS? ;)
